Boy oh boy. It's been a long journey on this one.
After spending time in Ukraine during the war and thinking deeply about the absolute fucking stupidity of human conflict, I became obsessed with another part of the world that feels like it could slide into catastrophe with terrifying ease. Another regional struggle. Another proxy theater. Another slow-motion collision between superpowers. Another collapse.
Footage includes:
TSMC plants in Kaohsiung, Taichung, and Hsinchu // the bizarre military parade in Washington DC // abandoned malls in Western New York // shipping lanes in Savannah, Shanghai, and Hong Kong // ghost steel mills in Bethlehem, PA // Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park // Tiananmen Square
The film exists in two overlapping realities.
One is populated by war criminals, despots, petrogarchs, zealots, defense contractors, pedophiles, and media hallucinations.
The other is inhabited by contemporary folk spirits: Teletubbies, SpongeBob, Ronald McDonald, Jesus Christ, forgotten mascots, bootleg cartoon creatures, and quantum ghosts. The creatures in this second realm do not approve of us, and they’re getting ready to fucking destroy us.
The only being capable of moving between these two dimensions is an 8-foot-tall creature named Dibby.
Dibby is doing the best that he can.
Two sequels are already incubating:
CCTV2: First Island
CCTV3: Dear Leader
(CCTV stands for China Central Television — the state television broadcaster of China.)
SPECIAL THANKS: Jess Wegrzyn, Romullo, John Fisico, Addie, Dune
Love love love.
